An insatiable appetite for ancient and modern tongues

About us

"The Language Gulper" was conceived by us, Alejandro Gutman and Beatriz Avanzati, several years ago. We created the website recently (May 2013) after intensive research on world languages, ancient and modern. Its goal is to describe languages in a scholarly but accessible way employing a more or less similar format for each article. A project like this can never be completely finished so we are committed to expand it and improve it as much as possible.

We are a married couple living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our native language is Spanish but we wrote "The Language Gulper" in English to reach a larger public. We are molecular biologists by training and after living and working several years in Europe (France, Belgium, UK) we became attracted to the culture of Ancient India.

Back in Buenos Aires, one of us (Alejandro) learned Sanskrit at the University of Buenos Aires (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras) studying it, afterwards, on his own. Later, he taught Sanskrit to Beatriz and to private students in Buenos Aires (he is still active as a Sanskrit teacher). Alejandro created a website (in Spanish) called "El Portal de la India Antigua" about some aspects of Ancient Indian civilization. He translated from Sanskrit into Spanish the Bhagavadgītā and the complete poems of Bhartṛhari, and co-translated with Beatriz the entire Buddhacarita.

As Sanskrit is an ancient Indo-European language and being familiar with several modern Indo-European ones, we developed a passionate interest in Indo-European languages first, and later in world languages and language structure.
